What Do These Stones Mean?

Fathers play a vital role in the lives of their children. Their child’s first concept of God, their outlook on life and the way they treat their future mate and children all derive from the way they see their Fathers. Wow what a role God has given men and fathers! A role of leadership given to be used to impact the world. As men we must answer the call to glorify God and lead families to Jesus and to have the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. We must be able to tell them what God has done, what He is presently doing and what He can do in the days ahead.

Let’s take a look at Joshua 4. The Israelites are facing the river Jordan . At this season it was overflowing its banks. Joshua told the priest to step in with the Ark of the Covenant, the promises of God. As soon as they obeyed, the waters backed up and became dry land. He made a way where there seemed to be no way. The children of Israel walked across in victory. Joshua had told them previously in chapter 3 to sanctify themselves for tomorrow God would do wonders among them.

After this great miracle, Joshua instructs twelve men to get twelve stones and place them as a testimony. These stones were left to remind them in years to come of the faithfulness of God. When they passed by these stones, they had a story to tell of what God did in the past, and of what God was doing in the present, and of what God was going to do in the future. Because they had witnessed the miraculous, they were able to testify to future generations of what the stones meant:

  1. The Hand of God was seen there.
  2. The Power of God was demonstrated there.
  3. The Presence of God was felt there.
  4. The Fear of God was known there.
  5. The Love of God was shown there.
  6. The Provision of God was given there.
  7. The Faithfulness of God was proven there.
  8. The Steadfastness of God was proven there.
  9. The Word of God was proclaimed there.
  10. The Greatness of God was acknowledged there.
  11. The Blessings of God were experienced there.
  12. The Promises of God were fulfilled there.

Fathers, let us not fail to tell of the faithfulness of God to ALL generations.
